Lionel Barber, Editor of "The Financial Times", joined the list of distinguished figures who have associated themselves with the Geddes Awards when he delivered the annual Geddes Lecture in November 2008 to an appreciative  audience  in  the  newly  opened  Doctorow  Hall  at St  Edmund  Hall, Oxford.    His  lecture was  titled
'W(h)ither journalism? The future of the press and new media'.

The Geddes Memorial Lecture is a chance for student journalists to meet prominent figures in the media world, and to hear their views on the state of journalism today. Previous speakers have included former TV war correspondent and ex-independent MP Martin Bell; former editor of the Spectator and The Sunday Telegraph Dominic Lawson; Britain's leading current affairs interviewer, Jeremy Paxman; Independent Editor Roger Alton; Sir Peter Stothard, Editor of The Times Literary Supplement and former Editor of The Times; Jon Snow of Channel 4 News; Nick Robinson, the BBC's Political Editor; Matthew D'Ancona, editor of "The Spectator", and Martha Kearney, presenter of the BBC's "World at One" and "Newsnight Review".
